UTech, Jamaica 2015-16 Annual Report

The Faculty of Science and Sport (FOSS), established in September 2009 on the foundation of the former Department of Science and Mathematics, provides educational opportunities, research, and consultancy services related to the application of science and technology to the educational, industrial, business, health and sport sectors. The Faculty offers courses of study at both undergraduate and graduate levels and delivers science, mathematics and sport elective modules for all courses of study across the University. The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Ja.) is proud to be dubbed the “Home of World Class Athletes,” and works to underscore the recognition that there is a link between the application of scientific principles and sustainable sporting success. COLLABORATIONS/LINKAGES SONAS On an initiative from USAID JaREEACH in May 2015 the Environmental Science Division agreed to collaborate on the development of a Climate Change module to be offered to students across the campus. The development of the module involved participants from five faculties and was sponsored by the JaREEACH project and facilitated by Iain Macdonald (a Canadian consultant contracted by the USAID project), Nadia- Deen Ferguson (ACDI/VOCA) and Sanatty Holnes (ACDI/VOCA). The development of the syllabus and teaching material for the module was completed in October 2015 and the module was approved by the Office of Curriculum Development as a University elective to be offered beginning in AY 2016/2017. The title of the module is “Taking Action on Caribbean Climate Change” (ENS 3003). The Environmental Science Division collaborated with personnel from the Faculty of The Built Environment (FOBE) to develop two syllabi for the Masters in Sustainable Energy and Climate Change. The modules are: Climate Change and Sustainable Lifestyles and Climate Change and Sustainable Planning. Dr Adonna Jardine-Comrie spearheaded the process.
