University of Technology, Jamaica ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 Page 62 Excellence Through Knowledge Dr. Irving McKenzie Interim Dean College of Oral Health Sciences School of Public Health and Health Technology Joint Colleges of Medicine, Oral Health and Veterinary Sciences College of Oral Health Sciences In 2009, the Government of Jamaica established the School of Oral Health Sciences, under the aegis of the College of Health Sciences, University of Technology, Jamaica. The School of Oral Health Sciences brought together the Dental Auxiliary School and the training programme for Dental Surgeons. The Dental Auxiliary School has a long and distinguished history of training dental auxiliaries for the Government of Jamaica Dental Services and as well as for the Dental Services of several Caribbean countries such as Barbados, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Turks & Caicos Islands, Cayman and Belize to name a few. The College currently offers the following Professional training programmes for Oral Health Professionals namely; y y Doctor of Medical Dentistry Course of Study with in-depth training in Public Health y y M.Sc. in Dental Therapy y y B.Sc. in Dental Hygiene y y B.Sc. in Dental Technology y y Diploma in Dental Assistance – advanced training in Dental Assisting Since 2012, the College of Oral Health Sciences consists of three schools, a Centre of Excellence and an Institute: y y The School of Medical Dentistry y y The Dental Auxiliary School (that existed since 1970) y y The Graduate School of Dentistry. y y The Caribbean Institute for Strategic Planning and Research in Oral Health The Caribbean Institute of Strategic Planning and Research in Oral Health (CISPROH) has hosted five international scientific conferences in Jamaica. The Oral Health Centre of Excellence is the clinical arm of the College and is an integral part of t oral health services in Jamaica. The centre is a referral centre for the government dental services in orthodontics, prosthodontics, paediatric, endodontics, restorative and special needs dentistry.
