SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES (SHSS) The Language Technology and Research Centre (LTRC) (formally Self Access Centre) The April 2016 meeting of the Faculty Board approved the reassignment of administration for general education language modules to the Language, Technology and Research Centre (LTRC) . This creates an income stream for the LTRC and consolidates the school’s delivery of general education language modules in English and Foreign languages. The ELPT and the DELE Centre will also be administered out of the LTRC. The first meeting of the newly-configured Language Technology and Research Centre took place on 15 September 2016. DELE 2016 All the students from UTech, Jamaica campus who sat the DELE examinations passed. Six of the seven students, the majority of whom were from the Chemical Engineering Programme, were sponsored by the Spanish Jamaica Foundation. Another student from the Chemical Engineering Programme sat the exam independently and was also successful. BA COMMUNICATION ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY Third Stream Income JPS Workshop: On April 19, 2016, a team from the SHSS led by Dr Nova Gordon-Bell delivered a 7 week workshop – Fundamentals of Advertising – for marketing and communication staff at the Jamaica Public Service Company. The course saw participants developing and producing small scale advertising campaigns. Media Services: BA CAT Media Services has to date completed just over a million dollars in billable services. Final Year Exhibition From 26-27 May 2016, the BA CAT Final Year Exhibition, Streaming Imagination – Reloaded was successfully staged. The Communication Arts and Technology Final Year Student exhibition is staged annually by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies. Exhibits include short video-documentaries, websites, radio features, and photo essays etc. that deal with a variety of current social issues. PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS y y JICA: On 25 January 2017, students sitting Basic Japanese received a visit from personnel from JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) and the Japan Foundation. The Japan Foundation offers international cultural exchange programs across the world. JICA is an agency of the Japanese government that coordinates official development assistance (ODA) for the government of Japan. y y The School of Humanities and Social Sciences facilitated the hosting of the second debate watch put on by the Jamaica Debates Commission (JDC). The debate watch is a joint BACAT final year student, Roshena Carty explains the concept of her story board at the annual 2016 BA CAT Final Year Student exhibition.
