University of Technology, Jamaica ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 Page 69 Excellence Through Knowledge initiative between JDC and the USAID/COMET II project which seeks to strengthen community and civil society organizations while increasing citizen cooperation and accountability. Specifically, the Debate Watches encourage citizens to inform and educate themselves and each other on the issues of consequence in their lives, their communities and the country. International Day 2016 Schools from all over the island came to the UTech, Jamaica Papine campus to participate in the multicultural showcase. Members of the diplomatic corps were also present to communicate the goodwill of their respective governments and people. Issues in Language The first Issues in Language panel discussion was hosted by the SHSS on 23 February 2017. The Panel, which was composed of SHSS lecturers and students from UTech Ja and UWI Mona, shared their personal and professional experiences with language in and out of the classroom. Research Colloquium The fourth annual SHSS Research Colloquium took place on 12 January 2017. Presentations included: The Delivery of Spanish for the Pharmaceutical Technology module; Brand Jamaica: Gender, Identity and Marketing Communication; and Administrators and Lecturers’ Perception of English Language-Mediated Academic Literacy Skill Development at a Jamaican University. Pamela Kelly Distinguished Lecture The fourth H. Pamela Kelly Distinguished Lecture – Probing Dis(semi)nation: Language in Media – was staged by SHSS on 26 January 2017. GRADUATE STUDIES AND RESEARCH Book Launch Dr. Martin Schade’s book, Incarnation: The Harmony of One Love in the Totality of Reality, was fo rma l l y launched on 20 October 2016 at Lillian’s Restaurant. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES Research Ethics Semi na r : The second research ethics seminar was held on 17 November 2016. The theme for the session was Research in Action Part 2 Public Lectures: y y The Institute of Educational Administration and Leadership – Jamaica (IEAL-J), in collaboration with the College of Health Science and the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies University of Technology, Jamaica, hosted its Seventh Public Lecture on 1 December 2016. The title of the lecture was: A Multi-Level Examination of Curriculum in Jamaica: Policy and Practice. y y The 4th Ubuntu Lecture series, Understanding Climate Change; Discovering Ubuntu, was held on 29 November 2016. STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS y y Three students in the FSDPM course of study participated as adjudicators in the St Mary 4-H Club Parish Day Achievement Day Exposition on 12 April 2016.
