UTech, Ja Annual Report 2017-18
University of Technology, Jamaica “Pioneering Past; Bright Future ” ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 50 This represents a modest increase of (15%) in the amount of money spent on the programme over the previous year, and a 7% increase in the number of students engaged. The programme is a significant value-added service to the academic enterprise as it appropriately complements a student’s academic pursuits with work experience; and that combination ultimately produces a better student outcome. Importantly, the overall growth in the Earn & Study Programme is due primarily to the growth in the funding for Expanded Programme, which has grown significantly from $9.3 Million in 2016/17 to $15.1 Million Dollars (62%) in 2017/18. Expanded Earn & Study Programme Funding for the Expanded Programme comes from the Division/Faculty budgets instead of the central programme budget. For the current review period, 93 students were employed on the Expanded Programme at a cost of $15 Million Dollars ($15,170,979.50). Please note that the figure for the Expanded Programme has been included in the overall programme figure of $31.2 Million Dollars reported above. Student Welfare Programmes Table 1.5 (below) indicates that for the 2017/18 fiscal year, a total of 2212 students benefited from welfare assistance in the form of grants, lunch subsidies and bus subsidies. This brings the total expenditure on welfare support programmes to $23.8 Million Dollars ($23,805,052.19). This represents a significant increase of 79% over the corresponding period last year. Financial assistance was provided in several areas to include tuition, boarding, rent, book, school supplies, and SLB processing fees; among other things. As the programme continues to grow, the University is able to provide well needed support to some of its most vulnerable students. Student Lunch & Bus Subsidy Programmes One of the most highly requested areas of assistance is with the purchase of meals and the payment of transportation costs to get to and from school. Many students struggle daily to meet these basic needs and so the University has ensured that students are able to access well needed assistance to cover at least one meal per day and to assist with daily transportation. For the review period, a combined total of 276 students benefitted from lunch subsidies (235) via NCB DEPARTMENT OF STUDENT FINANCING Cont’d.
