University of Technology, Jamaica “Pioneering Past; Bright Future ” ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 58 2017, to assess the course for the purpose of accreditation 5.Master of Science in Mathematics Teaching (offered in collaboration with Church Teachers’ College) – The site visit report was received from the University Council of Jamaica and responded to by the University. President’s Research Award, 2017 The President’s Research Award, 2017 was presented to Dr. Denise Daley, Programme Leader and Lecturer, Complementary and Alternate Medicine and Herbal Studies in the School of Allied Health and Wellness, College of Health Sciences. The award was based on Dr. Daley’s impressive cumulative research and scholarly output on functional foods and nutraceuticals over the last three preceding years. Dr. Daley was also the winner of Jamaica’s National Young Scientist/ Technologist Award in 2016 “for the creativity and innovativeness of her research work, its potential social and economic value, and its potential for supporting national development.” Research Development Fund (RDF) The Research Development Fund provides support for all areas of research undertaken by UTech, Jamaica staff members. The fund is managed by SGSRE. The University continued to provide internal funding support for research and related activities through the Research Development Fund (RDF). In keeping with his emphasis on increased research output by the University, during the reporting period, President Professor Vasciannie initiated revisions to the RDF that resulted in an increase in the number and type of activities for which funding support is provided. The expanded list of RDF-supported activities are: 1. Research projects (a ‘new researcher’ sub- category has been added); 2.Fees associated with the publication of peer- reviewed research papers, books, and/or book chapters; 3.Research capacity building activities 4.Protection of intellectual property 5.Conversion of Conference Presentations to Journal Papers (new category) 6.Development of publications derived from Theses/Dissertations (new category) 7. Hosting of Conferences (new category) 8.Research required to publish articles, book chapters and books (new category) Research, Technology and Innovation Day Research Technology and Innovation Day was held on Thursday, March 8, at the Shared Facilities Building. Prof Dr. Kinsgley Chin, a US-based Jamaica-born orthopaedic surgeon, inventor and entrepreneur delivered the keynote address. The main point of his presentation titled “Research to SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES, RESEARCH AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP Cont’d. Dr Denise Daley, Lecturer, College of Health Sciences accepts the President’s Award for Excellence in Research.
