University of Technology, Jamaica “Pioneering Past; Bright Future ” ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 61 is a collaboration between 15 European and Caribbean Higher Education Institutes, led by the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and aims to stimulate innovation in teaching in higher education through problem-based learning (PBL) in the Caribbean, to make higher education institutes and students better prepared to deal with contemporary urban problems and challenges. CARISCIENCE Conference The University through the SGSRE collaborated with the Scientific Research Council (SRC) and the University of the West Indies, Mona (UWI) to host the CARISCIENCE Regional Conference held in Jamaica, November 9 and 10, 2017. UTech, Jamaica contributed J$500,000 to the event at which several staff members presented papers and chaired sessions. SGSRE staff [Martin Henry and Dr. Paul Ivey] presented a joint reflective paper on the work of the SGSRE over “A Decade of Orchestrating Structured Research & Innovation Management at Jamaica’s National University: Looking Back and Looking Forward”. Intellectual Property Trademark Protection for the University’s Mascot – The UTech Knights The SGSRE in collaboration with the Office of the President, the Legal Counsel and Compliance Office, and the Department of Sport have taken steps to secure trademark protection of the University’s Mascot, paving the way for self- merchandizing of branded items or licensing of the trademarks to other parties. Consultancy Services Agreement A Consultancy Services Agreement was signed with an overseas-based university that wants to acquire UTech, Jamaica’s ‘know-how’ about producing hydrogen gas from water, for use in domestic cooking; Dr. Earl Wilson, Faculty of Engineering & Computing)is the UTech, Jamaica Researcher spearheading this initiative. Non-Disclosure Agreement A non-disclosure agreement was signed with another overseas-based university to facilitate the exchange of propriety software and ‘know- how’ in furtherance of collaborative research on techno-therapy – the use of computer-aided therapeutic interventions for stroke victims; Professor Felix Akinladejo, Faculty of Engineering & Computing) is the UTech Researcher involved with this initiative. Government of Jamaica/Government of South Africa Joint Cooperation Agreement on Science & Technology A South African Delegation of research scientists visited the University in March 2018 to discuss areas of collaboration for joint research projects. The Government of Jamaica and the Government of South Africa have set up a joint research fund which has issued its first call for projects.
