University of Technology, Jamaica “Pioneering Past; Bright Future ” ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 67 Mr Bruno Pouezat, UNDP Resident Representative delivering the opening address at the UNDP;s Social Good Summit hosted in partnership with UTech, Jamaica on September 28, 2017 at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium. Professor Stephen Vasciannie, CD, President, UTech, hosted the event. The keynote address was delivered by His Excellency Nestor Mendez, Assistant Secretary-General, OAS who encouraged the students to take full advantage of the opportunities within the region. A panel discussion chaired by the AVP Sustainable Energy, comprised representatives of Wigton Windfarm Limited; University of Technology, Jamaica; New Leaf Power; Ministry of Science Energy & Technology; OAS Department of Sustainable Development; and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The roundtable discussion is expected to provide inputs to the agenda of the IV Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) Ministerial meeting to convene in Jamaica in late 2019. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Social Good Summit The University of Technology, Jamaica hosted the UNDP Social Good Summit on September 28 2017. The event was organized by UNDP to examine the impact of technology and new media on social good initiatives around the world. A panel discussion under the theme 2030 Now: Global Goals and the Technology that will Help Achieve Them was one of the highlights of the day. Mr. Romaine Gordon, Faculty of Engineering and Computing (FENC) student and one of the lead robotic system developers in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) UTech Jamaica Student Branch showcases his Obstacle Avoid- ance Robot to Ms. Kristina Otiz, Acting Public Affairs Officer, US Embassy. The robot is able to navigate its way in a room and avoid collisions with objects.
